Graduate Academic Certificate Requirements
Approved by Graduate Council on October 8, 2007
Students completing a GAC in SLA will take five courses (20 units) as stipulated below:
Required (8 units):
_____ LIN 280: Theories of SLA (or SPA 212, or FRE/GER/SPA 291)
_____ LIN 281: Research in SLA
Two courses (8 units) taken from two of the following four areas:
Pedagogy
_____ SPA 215: Technology and Foreign Language Learning
_____ LIN 205, 298 or equivalent: Special topics. Students will have to consult with Graduate Adviser to determine which courses are appropriate.
_____ LIN 289: Pedagogical Applications of Second Language Acquisition Theory
_____ SPA 215: Special topics in Hispanic Linguistics. Students will have to consult with Graduate Adviser to determine which courses are appropriate.
_____ EDU 249: Discourse Analysis in Educational Settings
_____ GER 206: Cognitive Grammar for Applied Linguists
SLA and Multilingualism
_____ LIN 282: Bilingualism
_____ EDU 251: Research in bilingualism and second language education
_____ LIN 205, 298 or equivalent: Special topics. Students will have to consult with Graduate Adviser to determine which courses are appropriate.
_____ SPA 215: Special topics in Hispanic Linguistics. Students will have to consult with Graduate Adviser to determine which courses are appropriate.
SLA in Society
_____ EDU 249: Discourse Analysis in Educational Settings
_____ EDU 252: Multicultural teaching and curriculum.
_____ EDU 253: Language and literacy and linguistic minorities

SLA and Cognition
_____ PSC 264: Psycholinguistics
_____ LIN 205, 298 or equivalent: Special Topics. Students will have to consult with Graduate Adviser to determine which courses are appropriate.
_____ SPA 215: Special topics in Hispanic Linguistics. Students will have to consult with Graduate Adviser to determine which courses are appropriate.
Required independent study (4 units): Leading to a research paper describing theoretical, empirical, or applied work in second language acquisition.
_____ LIN 299 or equivalent: Independent study
Degree Conferral Process
Successful completion of the GAC requirements is recognized by (1) notation on a student’s transcript and (2) the awarding of a certificate with established language (Systemwide Academic Senate Regulation) and the gold seal of the University of California. The University seal may be used only on certificates awarded as part of an approved GAC program.
